Ciao, amici. I briefly mentioned last Friday that I was revamping my posting schedule. Today, I’m unveiling the second of my changes.
Wednesdays are now WIP Wednesdays.
I am going to use a random word generator every week, choose a word out of the ten presented to me, and share something relevant from my WIP.
FYI: I also participate in #1LineWed, where I’m given a word and asked to share something related to that theme on Twitter. You can find me there using that hashtag most weeks, but this will be a different theme and a different post.
Today’s word is love.
In the past, when I was writing romances, this would have been easy. Actually, it might not have been, as I would have had too many options to choose from.
Today, as I’m writing sci-fi as D.L. Cross, my options for that word are limited. However, I found one I think you might find enticing.
While he rubbed a tender spot on his temple, he took a deep breath. Fresh air wafted in, carrying scents of loam and plants and something inherently wild. He took in the undulating hills and waving grasses, the sporadic rock formations and towering mountains. How heβd love to have weeks to enjoy, to explore. But he was denied those simple pleasures.Β
Instead, he was once again fleeing for his life.
Technically, this isn’t from a work in progress; it’s from a work completed. I’m currently working on book three of the Astral Conspiracy Series in the Sterling and Stone Invasion Universe. This quote is from book two. I wish I could tell you the title, but I haven’t shared that or the cover yet. Soon, but not quite yet. Rest assured, though, the book is completed, the final draft approved, and it’s in pre-production.
In the meantime, I hope it’s making you wonder who said this, where he is, what happened to him, and why he’s on the run. Theories? I’m happy to entertain some. But I probably can’t confirm anything. π€
If the quote interests you, it won’t be long until you can read the book and see for yourself who said it and what it’s in reference to.
Until then, I hope you visit my Astral Conspiracy Series page or the Invasion Universe page for more information. Or you can jump right to Amazon and review my pen name’s page (D.L. Cross).
If you have comments or questions about the quote I chose, let’s talk about it below. I can’t promise I’ll reveal anything in my answers, but I’d love to start a discussion. Grazie.
Man. Giving us a juicy excerpt when we can’t even pre-order the book? Insidious, Staci. What a tease! π π

Just trying to keep people interested until the release… π

Good choice, Staci and yes it makes me want to know more!! I have both the book and short story on my Kindle. I need more hours in my day! π

Oh, thank you. I’m glad the excerpt enticed you. When you get around to it, I’d love to know what you think. π½

Have yet to read book 1, so I can’t guess the character, but I like the visualization. And fleeing again…. how many times has he fled for his life already, I wonder?

It’s a five-book series. His fight-or-flight response will take a while to readjust to the new world situation. π

Ooo! I HAVE to read this series! I feel so out of the loop because I haven’t read book 1 (or the short story). And I just love the phrase ‘undulating hills’. Love the idea of WIP Wednesday too… when I get back into writing (not just editing) I might have to do this, even if only as a way to keep me writing π

Thanks for the kind words, Jess. I’m enjoying writing this series, and I’m glad to see people interested in it.
I’d LOVE to see you participate in WIP Wednesday! Looking forward to it.

Great idea! I love π there are word generators for almost anything, lol.
The visuals are so vivid I can feel the breeze on my face and the rich loam aroma of the earth, and then you added that teaser!
Looking forward to book 2!

Aw, you made my day. That’s exactly the response I wanted for that passage. Thank you!

Loved that “love” wasn’t romance this time. And my first guess would be Landon, but you’re tricky enough that it could be someone else:) I’m still waiting for Landon to meet the alien–the one I’m hoping is nice.

And I “love” that I’m keeping everyone on their toes! Thanks, Judi. π

Like most others, I’m guessing this is Landon. The way his female students flirt with him made me think of Harrison Ford’s students in the first Indiana Jones movie, lol

He is loosely based on Indiana Jones. I “cast” him as Michael Fassbender, so that’s who I see as I write him. (And what student wouldn’t daydream about Michael Fassbender? Or Harrison Ford? LOL)

That is a clever use of ‘love’. I’d have the same problem, love being an emotion my folks don’t experience. I’m looking forward to your next book.

Well, I figure even villains love something, so I jumped on that word. Some of my options weren’t nearly as easy. I can’t wait to see what next week’s word is.
Thanks for the kind words, Jacqui.

I love how vivid those images are! See what I did there…love π
I would guess Landon too, but who knows what you have up your sleeve for book 2. I can’t wait to find out when it’s released!

Well, that means the world to me. Thank you. I “love” that you’re so invested in these characters and this story.

Um, Landon Thorne? I don’t know what happened to him, but surely he’s in peril somewhere.:-)

He certainly has a way of finding trouble, doesn’t he? Great guess, Priscilla (but I won’t say for sure if you’re right).

I “love” the quote you chose. It does pull the reader in.

LOL. (Dad would “love” that joke.) Thanks. I’m sure some excerpts will be longer, but I thought this one was just right.

Love this idea, love the quote, and love, well, LOVE! π
A great choice to jump start your new weekly series, and I’ll be following along, for sure! π β€

Oh, cool! I’m so glad you also decided to begin this week (since you came up with the idea). I’m guessing the quote is from Landon but after reading The Scout, it could be J. π

Did you start this week, too? That’s great. (I”m going to your site next.) Maybe we can hold each other accountable to keep up with it.
And I’m not telling who said it, but I “love” that you took a guess. β€

You’re keeping us in suspense. But that’s okay. π Looking forward to the next book!

I can’t wait for it to release. I thought it was moving up in the queue; now I think it’s moving back. I’ll know for sure after my meeting today. Fingers crossed!

Great quote, Staci. Like Denise, I reckon the quote comes from Landon. Now I REALLY can’t wait for book two! Loving the WIP Wednesday from you and from Joan Hall … I may just have to do something myself … you both are shaming and inspiring me, lol. Reblogged on: https://harmonykent.co.uk/wip-wednesday/

I have no desire to shame anyone, but I’m thrilled this has inspired you. Joan and I had been talking about this; I didn’t realize she was starting today, too. (I should have; on retrospect, she did say August.)
Great guess, Harmony.

While I can neither confirm nor deny, I will say that was an excellent guess. π
