Author Inspiration and This Week’s Writing Links

Ciao, amici! How’s it going? I’ve seen some wonderful vacation pics from a few of you. I hope you’re all enjoying your summer.

I was not on vacation this week. (Or at all this summer.) And it’s either been too rainy or too hot to use the pool. (Yes, it can be too hot to cool off.) I’ve just been working. And working. And working.

Which brought me to this quote. Well, it’s not exactly a quote. It’s something I remember reading a long time ago (author unknown), and I always wished I knew who said it because it fit me perfectly:

And one day, the girl obsessively reading books
became the woman happily writing them.

I’m sure I paraphrased it. I couldn’t find the quote when I looked for it. But this was the gist. And it stuck with me for years. I am that girl-turned-woman. And I still obsessively read (although I’ll never get through my TBR list), but now I happily write, too.

Girl or boy, woman or man, I hope you have an enjoyable obsession that’s become a happy vocation. (And because I’m a reader/writer, I kind of hope you share that with me.)

  1. Love the quote, Staci! And bummer–you do know there is still time left in summer for you to enjoy the pool, right? Take a break and float around for a bit. Maybe get your muse to do some of your work for you, like writing character bios or designing settings. Or maybe just distract you while you’re in the pool relaxing. I mean, covertly watch him work out while pretending to read another book on your TBR… Just sayin’ 😀

    1. It’s been too hot even for Mr. Muse to take a dip. (Thank God, or I’d never get anything done.)

      I should put him to work, though. If he’s doing some writing, he won’t be getting in trouble. Or getting me into any!

    1. I ended the week with my back in spasm. Sigh. I’d rather be busy than bored, but I’d rather be bored than over-extended… especially if I have to re-aggravate a physical malady. Working with the heating pad today. But this, like time, shall pass. Have a great week, Teagan.

    1. I actually went swimming yesterday. For about half an hour. I burnt the bottom of my feet and my left forearm on the pool deck, and the water was too tepid to cool off. I gave up in favor of a cold shower and a glass of iced water.

  5. I guess we’ve been lucky here, the temps have sat in the low 20’s (that’s around 72F) for the past couple of months with just enough rain to keep the plants happy.
    I love the quote- it would look lovely painted on a wall in my office, if I had one, lol

  6. Thank you Staci! I really put emphasis on fun…lol. Happy birthday to your family members and pets. I have a cat and dog with a July birthday along with myself and daughter. I won’t mention what I start shopping for next. I’m for all for 1997:)

    1. Ah, 1997. That was a good year. My son was born then.

      One of my dogs shares Harry Potter’s birthday. (But I prefer to think Harry has my dog’s birthday. 🙂 )

  8. I that girl reader turned woman write, too. I have my parents to thank for that 🙂

    I just came back from a lake vacation and the weather has been wretchedly hot. I have been enjoying my pool, but today and tomorrow the heat index is to hit 110. I’ll see if the pool is cool enough. It’s my reading domain during the summer.

  9. This year’s been a scorcher, that’s for sure. And lots of rain. We meant to take a couple of long weekend trips, but the weather’s either been crappy or time’s gotten away from us. It’s been a busy year. Hope you get a few days to play sometime before the snow falls.

  13. Yep – that quote applies to me, also. I was just thinking about school starting again – here in KY, the schools start around the first week in August. Way too early. Have a great weekend, Staci!

    1. That’s crazy!

      Ohio and Michigan have different schedules. Ohio starts mid-August and wraps up at the end of May/early June. (At Memorial Day would be ideal. They go about a week later, which isn’t bad.) Michigan starts after Labor Day (which makes much more sense to me) but ends in the middle of June. When we moved from Ohio to Michigan, my kids got almost a whole additional month off. We loved it. But when we moved back, they lost that month. We all hated it. School should be Labor Day to Memorial Day, with a week for Thanksgiving, two weeks for Christmas, and a week for Easter. They can keep all the other nonsense days off. But no one asked me.

      My kids are getting ready to go back to their college classes. This summer went so fast!

    1. Even as I laughed, I really related to her story. My family has miscommunications like that all the time (often because of me, but not always, I swear!) and her post really hit home for me.

    1. We had a couple of mid-July family birthdays, and both of our dogs have birthdays coming up. When I realized we were at that part of the calendar, I was floored. It really feels like it was just Valentine’s Day. (I actually just wrote 1997 on a check—no idea where that came from, other than wishful thinking.) I’m hoping to enjoy some part of the summer; I just can’t figure out when to carve out the time!
