Author Inspiration and This Week’s Writing Links

Ciao, everyone. Hope you’re having a great week.

Clearly, three-day weekends screw me up. All week long, I struggled to realize what day it was. Tuesday felt like Monday. I thought it was Thursday twice, neither time on Thursday. The only reason I’m getting this posted on time is that my daughter said something about Friday being tomorrow (as I write this, it’s actually Thursday evening).

It’s been a strange week. And I’ve been working hard. I have a lot to share, but I need to collect my thoughts. Hopefully I’ll catch you all up next week. Until then, I thought I’d share this quote.

Step Forward

Nora Roberts. She has a way of putting things, doesn’t she? And given her name is synonymous with romance writing, she probably knows a thing or two about chasing dreams.

Back in January — no, actually back in December — I decided this was going to be my year. I was going to make it to the next level.

I probably should have had a better plan.

I find myself over-extending more often than not. I need to learn to work smarter, not harder. And I really need to figure out marketing. That’s my next step. But I digress. More on my updates next time. For now, suffice it to say that I am taking steps forward. They’re slow and my strides are small, but I’m not standing still.

And I hope you’re doing the same. Or better! Are you? Let’s talk about it.

And now, this week’s links:

Posts by me, about my work, or at sites I contribute to:

At the time of this writing, Romance University is experiencing website issues, so I can’t access the other posts for this week. And the Friday Story Empire post isn’t finished yet. You can track the missing posts down by visiting those respective websites, though.

Posts by others in the industry:

* Indicates two conflicting points of view. I’d love to hear your thoughts on each.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

  2. Staci, I’m the same with the week … totally confused and doesn’t help it’s been school holidays here and my husband had three days off and went back to work today! Great quote from Nora Roberts! I’m glad your making strides forward … I seem to make lots of strides … in many directions I feel at times! Have a good weekend and here’s to back to normal next week! Xx

  3. I’ve been off all week also, Staci. Excited for oldest son to start is ‘real world’ job, youngest son back from his Europe cruise, book release, marketing…..and nothing done on the WIP. Work smarter, not harder needs to be my mantra. Excited to hear your news!

  4. Even though this was a short week, I felt it dragged in many ways. In others, it motored by at light-speed. 2018 has been good to me so far, even though I haven’t had a new release yet which has impacted my back list sales. Even so, I still feel like I’m making strides moving forward.

Regarding the two posts with conflicting views….I don’t like when mysteries are left unsolved. The first book I read by an author who is now a favorite, left a big gaping hole at the end, and I was SO ANNOYED!!! I was determined not to read anything by her again but her style was so good, I picked up successive books. I love her stuff now, but that first book still grates with that open ending. Not my type of mystery.

    • This was definitely a weird week. I think I could benefit from a time machine.

I don’t like unsolved mysteries, either. But then I started thinking about some of my short stories. (I’d probably call them speculative.) I leave a lot of those endings open for the reader to determine what happens. They aren’t mysteries, though. I think I want my mysteries solved but my speculative stories to let me… speculate. 😉

      • Yes, I’m okay with that. I’ve read a lot of speculative fiction, even sci-fi or fantasy with open endings. For mysteries, I invest a lot of time reading to learn “whodunit” and I want that delivery at the end, LOL!
