“Open your eyes, John.” The demonic voice echoed through the cave, reverberated off the walls until it rocked his very soul.
He shook his head, whimpering and quivering in a crumpled mass on the floor.
“Open your eyes. See your future.”
“N-no.” John barely heard his own voice. He doubted the sound carried any further than the dank crevasse he cowered in.
“Do not deny me. Open your eyes. Witness the future I promise. See the end, John.”
Fear’s icy fingers grasped him in fists of steel, forced him further into the fissure in the clammy wall.
He took a deep breath and prepared for the end. A soothing warmth enveloped him, and the pressure relinquished. A rich baritone sang in his soul. “Open your eyes, John. Open them, and see.”
His eyelids fluttered open. Warm white light radiated through the cavern, blinding him in its powerful glow.
John squared his shoulders, stood, and smiled. He saw everything, and he understood.
This piece was inspired by the WordPress daily prompt: Revelation.
For some reason (maybe the graphic) by the time I reached the second “John” I was think of the Book of Revelations.
Nicely done, Staci!

I’m starting to think there’s a group of us who are sharing a brain. We’ve all been making the same comments and connections. 🙂
